We also grew up with a love of music I played classical piano for many years, then played drums in the PV High marching band, and sang in the choral music groups. I continued to sing at UCLA, and played the drums in the "solid gold sound of the UCLA marching band". I was very insecure and shy in high school, and really didn't do that well. SAT scores and my essays were definitely what got me into UCLA. I had no idea what I wanted to do, only that I was good in math and other quantitative subjects. In the late '70's, there was no undergrad business curriculum at UCLA, so I was an economics major. My last summer in high school I got my first job. My mother still takes credit for having forced me to take typing the year before, and I went to Marineland (like a small Sea World) near where I lived. It was so intimidating to interview with this older gentleman, and I'd gone in for some type of office job, but they had only an opening in food service, so I worked in the main food restaurant, which was not a sitdown but like a large MacDonald's. I had my first taste of success early because for some reason, when they had a manager position open up that summer, they promoted me. I felt so important closing up at night, with all of my "official" duties. I loved that job, working with a lot of fun people. But the next summer, after I'd started at UCLA, I put my typing skills to use and got a secretarial job at Hughes Aircraft. However, early in my sophomore year, I was still uncertain of what I wanted to do, so I withdrew and went to live on the East coast for a few months with my brother and friends, from Boston down to New Jersey. I loved the East coast, so I transferred to New York University for one year. I came back to UCLA for about a year then, much to my parents' delight, I withdrew again, this time to follow the Formula II grand prix motorcycle racing circuit around the U.S. and Canada. I had always loved motorcycles, and got a fast Yamaha RD400 street bike when I was 18. My friends raced, so I decided to tour with them. I like to encourage young people who don't know what they want to do that, you can wander when you're young and still end up as a fairly stable adult!! I continued to work at Hughes every summer and, when I graduated from UCLA, they made me an offer in Operations Management essentially, administration. I got a lot of good experience in budgeting, operations and supervision there. But I really felt the need to distinguish myself; it just didn't seem like having a bachelor's degree was enough. My boss always assumed that my coworker, who was male, knew more or was more qualified. So I applied to business school and, after eighteen months of fulltime work, went to the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. EDUCATION MBA University of Chicago Graduate School of
