In his second year as Channel 4 San Diego’s play-by-play announcer
for Padres baseball, Matt Vasgersian brings a unique blend of baseball
knowledge and enthusiasm to Channel 4 San Diego’s Padres telecasts.
Prior to joining Channel 4 San Diego in 2002, Vasgersian was the television
voice of the Milwaukee Brewers from 1997-2001. His love of the game and
sense of humor have earned him accolades throughout the baseball community.
“I take a fan’s approach to each game,” says the California
native, who has been called a “walking encyclopedia of cultural
references.”
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Vasgersian’s
national baseball credits include play-by-play duties with FX Baseball
Saturday Night, Fox Sports Net’s Baseball Thursday, and NBC’s
2001 Toyota Gator Bowl. He also served as emcee for Cox Presents: A Salute
to Teachers and Cox Carols by Candlelight. In January, he co-hosted Channel
4 Super Bowl Live, 10 days of live coverage of Everything But the Game
leading up to Super Bowl XXXVII.
Vasgersian began his career in Huntington, West Virginia in 1991 as play-by-play
man for the Chicago Cubs’ short-season Class A affiliate. He ascended
rapidly through the Minor League ranks with stops at High Desert, California.
(Class A, San Diego) in 1992, El Paso, Texas (Double A, Milwaukee) from
1993-94, Syracuse, N.Y. (Triple A, Toronto) in 1995, and Tucson, Arizona.
(Triple A, Houston) in 1996. While in Syracuse, he co-hosted ESPN2’s
Minor League Game of the Week.
A member of the Screen Actors Guild since age seven, he appeared in an
episode of the television show “The Streets of San Francisco”
with Michael Douglas and Karl Malden, and the movie “The Candidate”
with Robert Redford. A self-proclaimed rock critic, he performed lead
vocals with KB’s Midlifecrisis, a local band in Milwaukee.
