How does it all ADD UP?
ALL that I've experienced and accomplished in my past careers has helped build expertise and confidence that enables me to stretch myself into this second career as Creator, Producer & Host of the weekly Web Radio Show: MyCoolCareer.com!
I regularly call upon the knowledge I gained & used daily in high level business-to-business (B2B) Sales:
•Chutzpah to call and ask prominent citizens – complete strangers – from a wide variety of professions to be on my show – a show they'd never heard of, and "what's web radio?!" (they're adults), to ask them to do some "homework" – put together a BIO for me and send a digital pic.
•Good people skills – I've got to be professional and friendly, concise and convincing – these people don't know me from Adam! I've got to be able to relate to a wide range of personalities, make my Guests comfortable before and during the interview.
•I do a lot of writing, researching and writing (hopefully) fun, interesting and compelling show interviews, create marketing pieces to spread the word about the show, send documents to my Guests and others about the show, develop brochures, press releases, content for the website. I've prepared hundreds of sales proposals, stand-up presentations, communicated with customers via email and also drafted advertising copy. Your grip on the English language, spoken and written, has got to be good – in life credibility is vital.
•"Give good phone": I spend a lot of time on the phone, prospecting for new Guests, talking with the media, career counselors and school districts. I'm professional, concise and respectful of their time, and lively!
•And then there's PASSION. I love what I do – and I wouldn't have it any other way. I want that for you, and you can have it.
Some Advice
1. If you use the excellent self-assessment and career exploration tools available you won't have to flail much.
Find out who you are NOW! You don't have to flail or use the frustrating process of elimination to find a career rewarding for you. Use the self-assessments on MyCoolCareer, ask your school career advisors for help with other self-assessments and guidance. Then EXPLORE your career ideas while you're still a student (it's much easier this way!).
2. Plan on 3 different careers in your life
Why plan for more than one career? Either you'll be ready for a change . . . or a change will happen to you. In either case you want to be ready. Sometimes it's just "time to go", the passion is gone, and a New Passion comes or is found. The Department of Labor says that average person will have three, count them: THREE DIFFERENT CAREERS IN YOUR LIFETIME. The truth is that there were, and are, a number of RIGHT careers for me (and you) . . . not just one. It's smart to keep your eyes open to what's going on in your career field so you're ahead of any changes. I also recommend doing self-assessments throughout your career . . . because you're going to change, and the results may give you a new career idea you'd like to pursue.
